Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Last week, we made some Elvish Mint & Berry Pies for the challenge word “Elf” This week’s challenge word was “Prophecy.”
At first, I thought to make some food that is a subject of prophecy. Coming up short on my research, though, I chose to make a dish using ingredients associated with divination, visions, or prophets. I ended up making some smoked mushrooms using bay and tea leaves, marigold petals, uncooked rice, and rubbed sage.
Sage holds a place in Celtic and Roman traditions as an herb to clear the mind, while the Native Americans would burn it to purify an area of negativity. Calendula, or marigold, I’ve featured on the blog before as a Puritan witchcraft deterrent. Funnily enough, though, it historically held significance as an herb used in divination rituals and prophetic dreams.
Tea leaf divination, or tasseomancy, traces back the medieval European fortune tellers reading spatters of wax, lead, or other molten substance. This practice evolved into tea leaf reading in the seventeenth century after Dutch merchants imported tea from China. Rice, another Asian import, also finds itself the medium of the prophetic I-Ching and Shinto rituals.
The Oracle of Delphi would chew bay leaves, or breathe their burning fumes to induce visions and prophecies. There is no substantive proof that bay leaf is a narcotic. And the hallucinations were more likely resulting from possible pockets of ethylene gas seeping out from under the temple.
I don’t feel like I need to explain how mushrooms are considered prophetic. That said, this recipe calls for button mushrooms. You know, the kind you can find (legally) in grocery stores. I will not be held liable for your shenanigans!
There is one change from this video I want to note, though. Make sure to place a metal pie plate in between the smoking mix and steamer basket to catch the juices and keep the smoke mix hot.
