Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Last week, we made some Tea- Smoked Mushrooms for the challenge word “Prophetic.” This week’s challenge word was “Good.”
My initial idea was to make a super-healthy dish. It didn’t ultimately resound with me, however. While yes, good-for-you as a trait could fit within the central theme of “good.” I don’t feel it works, though, in representing what the concept means in Dungeons & Dragons.
Third edition D&D defines “good” as “altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient beings. Good characters make personal sacrifices to help others.” Multiple campaign settings go even further of creating planescapes embodying “good” virtues and philosophies such as Elysium, Bytopia, Ysgard, and Mount Celestia.
When I saw entries for Elysian Pear and Bytopian Cheese on PowerScore’s Great List of D&D Food and Drinks, I knew these upper “goodness” planes were where I wanted to go with this week’s dish.
So that’s why I chose to combine a few items from the upper planes into a trifle layered like the realms of Mount Celestia. Planescape: Torment describes Elysian Pears as “amongst the most flavorful breeds of pear in the planes, and treasured by epicures throughout the Outer Planes.” For the dairy portion of the trifle, I then chose to make a goat cheese cream inspired by Bytopian cheese.
I then consulted mythology and folklore for my other ingredients. The realm of Ysgard references the World Tree and Valhalla from Norse Mythology. With that I made a syrup using hard apple cider to reference the immortality-granting golden apples of Idunn. Then I combined the cider with a ton of honey, the assumed ambrosial nectar from Mount Olympus.
And finally, I added some other “good” ingredients. First dill, which symbolizes good spirits, then mint representing eternal refreshment, wisdom, and virtue. I even mixed in some angel food cake because I love dad jokes.
I never apologize for puns. Honestly, though? This flavor combo is heavenly.
