Munchies & Minis | Roses of Calimport

Roses of Calimport stuffed borek inspired by The Forgotten Realms campaign of Dungeons & Dragons. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop RPG-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Far too long ago, we made some Adventure Zone-themed goat cheese pizzas for “Monster of The Week.” The next challenge word was “Shopping.”

I admit it. The reason why I’m still posting recipes from last year is that this is the SECOND recipe I created for this challenge. When I think of the word “shopping” in terms of food, I think of street food. I first made a Waterdeep-themed oyster skewer. Fit for human consumption, it was not. It occurred to me then that medieval English cuisine is not the way to go.

So I decided to head south on the Faerunian map to the land of Calimshan and trade city of Calimport

The Forgotten Realms campaign bases Calimport on a mishmash of the Ottoman Empire and medieval Arabia. Built by the djinn and now ruled by their former slaves, this city values the finer luxuries in life. Boasting the largest seaport in Faerun, you can get anything you want for the right price. And we all know that shopping for every wonderous item imaginable can work up an appetite. So that’s why I made a Calishite version of börek.

Börek is a Turkish phyllo dough pastry stuffed with nuts or ground meat of varying shapes and sizes. The kind I’m making specifically today is Gül böreği, or “rose börek” where they are coiled into small rolls resembling roses. Rosewater and extracts often appear in Middle Eastern cooking so I chose to incorporate a bit of that as well into my filling.

I based my filling on “Calishite cheese” from 2nd-edition’s Aurora’s Whole Realms’ Catalogue, which defines it as “The Calishites added curry to give this cheese some extra kick while preserving it at the same time. The spice also added a greenish tint to the cheese.”

Calimport, being within a primarily desert country, is more likely to have goats in abundance than cows. So with that, I blended feta with cream cheese, ricotta, and curry powder. I then mixed in some walnuts and raisins for texture and Italian parsley for that greenish color.
