Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop RPG-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Far too long ago, we made some Calishite cheese and walnut-stuffed borek for “Shopping.” The next challenge word was “Luck.”
It doesn’t seem fitting to discuss good fortune without bringing up Lady Luck, herself. I’m talking about the Faerunian goddess of luck, Tymora. This chaotic-good diety rules the Great Wheel of fortune in the upper planes, blessing the bold. As the saying goes, “A copper to the Lady returns tenfold in gold.”
Today’s recipe, though, is about a time when Tymora did not live in the upper planes. I am talking about Faerun’s Time of Troubles when the overdiety Ao, angry at the gods for neglecting their mortal charges, forced them to walk among their followers upon the earth.
Some of the gods took their newfound mortality and warred against each other. Tymora, however, went to her temple in Arabel, and personally protected the city until the Time of Troubles ended.
So, where am I going with this? Arabel is also known for its two distinct culinary items. The first is Bitter Black, a dark beer with a thick, deep-brown foam served at cellar temperatures. The other is Snowbread, a bread chock-full of molasses and nuts. According to the wizard, Elminster, snowbread got its name “from the copious amounts of sugar, flour, and white egg sauce sprinkled over the bread’s surface.”
So my version of Snowbread combines both of these elements by making a beer-based roll filled with brown sugar, walnuts, and spices. I then made a simple sabayon–an egg-based sweet sauce made with more beer to cover it before releasing an avalanche of powdered sugar on top.
