Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is my tabletop RPG-inspired live cooking show. Once a week, I make a snack or meal to pair with a side of dice rolls. You can catch me on Twitch (unless indicated otherwise on social media) Wednesday nights at 7 pm EST.
Last time I posted the video for spiced turkey wings inspired by Tiny Taverns RPG from Gallant Knight Games. In this week’s video, we return to Tiny Taverns for a recipe for wine gelatin “Cave Slime Compote.”
Gelatinous Compote
If you’ve played any high fantasy RPG, you know “you all meet in a tavern” as well as “once upon a time.” The thing about Tiny Taverns, though? Not only do you start in a tavern, but you also work there. Tiny Taverns is a slice-of-life roleplaying game “one of friendship, a group of former adventurers running a tavern together (…) in a fantasy world, replete with monsters, magic and cheerfully-crafted menus (and hijinks!)”
When I found Tiny Taverns’ Kickstarter in April, I knew I had to have it. You might remember a game where I played a Tavern keeper. I found not only did I love it, but I missed it. Sure, I love sword and sorcery combat, but the things that I genuinely desire from RPG are the character interactions and relationships. This game encourages friendships and rivalries, raising the stakes high and serving the steaks medium.
While there are mechanics for cooking and menu creation in the gamebook, the appendices provide some sample dishes your tavern may cook for your customers. That’s where I found today’s recipe for Cave Slime Compote:
“Sweet and sour cave slime is dissolved in boiling water, honey, and syrupy reduced wine. Then, chopped fruits, such as pears or gooseberries,
are stewed in the mixture with spices, such as vanilla, cinnamon, or clove. Gourmet versions may include mint or rosewater. It is either served warm with a thin slice of cheese or chilled with a dollop of whipped heavy cream.“
The closest thing this dish resembled (for me, anyway) was a gelatin parfait. Not just any gelatin parfait, a downright boozy one. So I set out to make the kind of parfait that would bestow “a beguiling air to any soirée.” The book’s illustration clearly shows two layers in the glass. So my foundation layer, I decided to use strawberry jello and mix it with mint extract.
The second layer, though, needed to incorporate gooseberries as well as pears. Have I ever mentioned how much a pain in the butt it is to find gooseberries in US grocery stores? I have your solution, though. Sauvignon blanc wine notoriously contains the same flavor compounds found in gooseberries.
Sure, it looks complicated. But its construction is deceptively simple. It just takes a lot of waiting. But that’s the best part, though, right? While that cave slime solidifies to perfection, you can work on writing your game session, play a video game, or even make another Tiny Taverns-themed recipe for Hippogriff Wings.
So dig in. As lovely as this Cave Slime Compote is, it really is best eaten after stabbing it to oblivion with a spoon and adding whipped cream.
