Announcing Breakfast of Champions!

Breakfast of Champions is a 5th-ed Compatible adventure and cookbook by The Gluttonous Geek.

I wrote a book, ya’ll!

Hello friends. For those just joining me because you saw “RPG” and “Cookbook” in the same social media post, welcome! My name is Catherine Barson Eastis, and I run this nerdy food blog, The Gluttonous Geek. For the past ten years (oh gods, it really has been ten years), I’ve been developing recipes inspired by our favorite sci-fi and fantasy franchises, including tabletop roleplaying games.

After taking TTRPG University‘s “Write Your Own TTRPG Adventure Class,” I’m finally starting my own franchise of (Dungeons & Dragons) 5th-ed compatible adventures/cookbooks. That’s right, they are adventures with story-related recipes you can serve during the game. After a year of crash-coursing through writing, formatting, testing, and print-prepping, it’s here, my first adventure: Breakfast of Champions!

Breakfast of Champions: The Premise

Welcome to Hearth, the City of Hospitality and home to The Plastered Possum. This family-operated tavern serves a brunch so good that fights used to break out while waiting for a table. That is until management said to take it outside – to the Arena!

The Plastered Possum now invites your party to compete in their 15th Annual Brunch n’ Brawl. This week-long tournament toasts the morning meal with silly-costumed arena fights. The prize? A year of free brunch at the hottest spot in Hearth.

The Book

Breakfast of Champions is a 5th-level comedic adventure and cookbook for a party of 3-5 players. I’ve written this adventure to favor in-person play by serving one to two recipe options during each gameplay session for an extra layer of immersion. I’ve even partnered up with my good friend Nick Picard (@ouijacore on Instagram), and he has developed a signature cocktail and mocktail for this adventure.

Each “day” of gameplay offers a sweet option, a savory option, and a gluten-free or vegetarian option between them. Are you playing digitally or unable to serve one or both recipes? I’ve included “tasting notes” to describe the flavors players experience eating each dish. Some dishes you can look forward to are:

  • Drench Toast Waffles: Cider-battered French toast waffles served with whipped maple syrup ricotta.
  • Bird on a Biscuit: Fried onion and breadcrumb-crusted chicken served on herbed biscuits with honey butter.
  • Rise n’ Shine Cakes: Orange-ginger mini cheesecakes with graham cracker cereal crumble.
  • Dawntide Mamaliga: A cheesy shrimp and grits take on Romanian polenta casserole.

As for the adventure? It contains trust trials, dungeon and non-lethal arena-style combat, roleplaying, and opportunities for character development. There are plenty of NPCs (illustrated by the fantastic Mattia Tagliazucchi or @tagla92 on Fiverr) to befriend or backstab. Also, I’ve created a table of 12 potential breakfast-themed competitors your party can face in the ring, so replayability is an option.

Have I whetted your appetite enough? Breakfast of Champions is available in PDF and softcover print format on DriveThruRPG for purchase, now!
