Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Last week we pressed some spellbook-inspired sandwiches for the challenge word “Intelligence.” This week’s challenge word is “Party.”

At first, I wanted to make a dish with ingredients inspired by each of the character classes that make up a balanced party. However, a resourceful party adapts to situations regardless of class. I then realized I’d be here all month trying to incorporate every single character class. Except for 3.5th edition Anchorites. Not able to leave 100 yards of home? Why are you even adventuring?!

So that’s when I decided to keep it simple and make a D&D party appetizer. And what better way to attack the darkness with your party, whether in a dungeon or a tavern, than with some salty snacks? That’s why I chose to reference the Dead Alewives’ improv comedy D&D sketch below.

How? With some Cheetos and Mountain Dew, of course! These are the prime ingredients for my recipe of “Cheet-Orbs” (cheese-laden sausage balls) and “dew-BQ” dipping sauce.

“Party” Cheet-orbs & Dew-BQ Sauce

Cheet-Orbs

Makes 36-42 sausage balls.

Equipment: Oven, mixing bowl, aluminum foil, baking sheet, stovetop, saucepan with lid, wire whisk.

Ingredients:

Cheet-Orbs:
  • 1 lb beer brats, casings removed
  • 1 lb mild Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 1/2 cups baking mix
  • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup crushed cheesy puffs plus more for garnish
Dew-BQ Sauce:
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup agave syrup
  • 3/4 cup Mountain Dew
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sriracha

Instructions:

Make the Cheet-Orbs:
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Mix the sausage and brats together in a mixing bowl with the baking mix, cheddar cheese, and cheese puff crumbs.
  3. Shape into ping-pong ball-sized balls and place on a foil-lined baking sheet.
  4. Bake the Cheet-orbs in the oven for 12-15 minutes.
  5. Start making your Dew-BQ sauce as it bakes. Sop up any excess grease with a paper towel before serving.
Make the Dew-BQ sauce:
  1. Whisk all the ingredients together in a saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low.
  2. Let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes until thickened. Turn off the heat and cover with a lid to keep warm.
  3. Transfer sauce to a dish when ready to serve.
Feed Your Adventuring Party:
  1. Transfer Cheet-orbs to a serving bowl and garnish with cheese puff dust.
  2. Serve the bowls of Cheet-orbs and sauce to your adventuring party. Mind the thief.
