Munchies & Minis | Dragonborn ‘s Delicacy

Dragonborn 's Delicacy inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Two weeks ago, we made some Upper Planes Trifles for the challenge word “Good.” This past week’s challenge word was “Dragonborn.”

The fifth edition D&D handbook gives us a basic rundown of the Dragonborn race, hatched from eggs, yet lacking wings and a tail. They are dragons in humanoid form, so to speak, living in a close-knit clan culture valuing honor and devotion. To find anything about their diet, though, I had to go back to 3.5 edition’s Forgotten Realms campaign setting.

In this campaign, the Dragonborn race was created then enslaved by dragons before rebelling and founding their own country of Tymanther. Arush Ashak, the village in the green lands of Tymanther serves as the “nation’s breadbasket” and agricultural hub. Their primary crops include barley, flax, rice, and sesame seeds, while common herd animals
include cattle, donkeys, goats, oxen, and sheep.

With this in mind, I made a sesame oil-seared lamb shoulder paired with fresh bread and a farmer-style spreadable cheese. It didn’t strike me as complex enough for the standard Dragonborn, however. Dragonborn culture places a strong emphasis on individual skill and self-improvement. The Dragonborn craft items with practical intent. But they still seek distinction with their craft. A Dragonborn cook, for example, would not only craft a dish to fulfill nutritional requirements. They would also reflect their skill in flavor complexity and presentation.

I didn’t find much else on what a Dragonborn considers a delicacy. But then I chose to supplement with some real-world research. So what’s the real-life equivalent of a Dragonborn? I’m sure there are better examples in the wild, but I went with a bearded dragon.

So what does a bearded dragon like to eat? Mostly crickets, but also a variety of fruits and vegetables that you would find in most grocery stores. In this case, I chose some healthy and flavorful mustard greens, alfalfa sprouts for texture, strawberries for sweetness, and some basil and thyme to round it all out.
