Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Two weeks ago, we made some Hasselback Potatoes of Holding for the challenge word “Loot.” This past week’s challenge word was “Mimic.”
I’ve had the idea for months since I made some treasure chest-shaped muffins for the theme word “Quest.” For that recipe, I needed to buy a mini-loaf pan. It only makes sense that a mimic-inspired dish would also be a mini treasure chest.
For the uninitiated, a Mimic is a D&D monster that changes form to lure in prey. With adventurers, it tends to hide in plain sight as various inanimate objects such as treasure chests, pillars, books, or in the case of D&D Web series One Hit Die, a suspiciously comfy sofa. Come too close to a mimic, and you may find yourself at the mercy of a creature who makes the Monster Book of Monsters look like Highlights Magazine.
So since a mimic only looks like something while remaining thoroughly animal, I chose to make meatloaves instead of muffins. I then added strips of bacon as tongues, garlic mashed potatoes as filling, and then garnished them off with some roasted garlic cloves teeth. With this recipe, the adventurer finally has a chance to bite back.
