MUNCHIES & MINIS | S1E6: McGuffin Muffins

McGuffin Treasure Chest Muffins inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Last week we made some Cherry, Bacon, and Pork Skewers for the challenge word “Orc.” This week’s challenge word is “Quest.

As soon as I saw this challenge word, the first idea popped into my head was “McGuffin Muffins.” McGuffin is a term coined by Alfred Hitchcock is a plot device in the form of a goal or object that the protagonist pursues, often with little explanation. An example would be the Holy Grail in King Arthur lore, or the title artifact in pretty much every Indiana Jones movie. A McGuffin is the very purpose for a Quest.

So at first, I thought I would make muffins using rare, sought out ingredients. I soon realized, though, that our wallets cannot handle baking muffins with saffron, pine nuts, and 24-karat gold flakes. That, and I don’t feel that it encompassed the theme well enough in terms of Dungeons & Dragons lore.

It then occurred to me that mini-loafs look suspiciously like treasure chests. And we know our dungeon-romping characters love that sweet loot payout at the end of an adventure. So that’s why I decided to take a note from Episode 2: Breakfast Map 4 Dungeon and make a honey-cornflake treasure reward inside our McGuffin Muffin treasure chests. This time we’re moving beyond the generic loot and mixing in some gems in the form of dried cranberries, apricots, and ginger.

Treasure McGuffin Muffins

Makes 8 stuffed treasure chest muffins.

Equipment: Oven, stovetop, 8-loaf mini loaf pan, saucepan, wire whisk, spatula,
two mixing bowls, spoon, baking spray, and a bread knife.

Ingredients:

Muffins:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 TB vegetable oil or melted
  • butter
  • 2/3 cup sour cream
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
Treasure:
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese,
  • softened
  • 1 cup cornflakes
  • 6 Tb honey
  • 4 Tb unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup diced dried apricots
  • 1/4 cup diced candied ginger
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • kosher salt

Instructions:

Make the muffins:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Coat the inside of the mini loaf pan with baking spray and set aside.
  3. Blend the flour, baking soda, baking powder, allspice, black pepper, and salt together in a large bowl with a whisk. Set aside.
  4. Beat the egg, oil or butter, sour cream, vanilla extract, and brown sugar in a mixing bowl with a wire whisk. Then, gradually stir in the flour mix with a spatula until moistened.
  5. Distribute the batter between the cups and bake in the oven for 24-30 minutes, rotating the pan once halfway, until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.
  6. Rest the muffins in the pan for 10 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Make the treasure:

  1. Heat the saucepan over a medium-high flame and add the butter and a pinch of kosher salt.
  2. When the butter melts stir in the honey and remove from heat once the mixture becomes frothy. Stir in the cornflakes, candied ginger, dried apricots, and dried cranberries to coat.
Loot the room:
  1. Carefully slice off the tops of the muffins and set aside. Using a spoon, scoop wells into the muffin bottoms about an inch deep with walls at least 1/2-inch thick.
  2. Spread a tablespoon of cream cheese into each well, then fill the fill with the cornflake mix.
  3. Perch the muffin tops on top of the cornflake mix to look like an open treasure chest. Serve your adventuring party.

I hope that this episode inspired you to start a culinary campaign of your own. Next week I’ll be tackling the #52WeeksOfDnD challenge word “Chaotic” (and mixing in a little bit of Munchkin: Crazy Cooks) with a recipe called “Sweets & Beets Pizza.”

Stay tuned for the next episode! Archived episodes are on YouTube.
