Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Far too long ago, we made some seafood stuffed pies for the challenge word “Urban Adventures.” The next challenge word was “Healing.”
Healing spells aside, the best way to restore hit points on a campaign is to take an eight-hour “long rest.” With this in mind, I needed to develop a recipe that utilizes this time period effectively while not exhausting the party’s food supply. I chose a bone-broth vegetable stew.
Bone broth, containing collagen, iron, amino acids, and other nutrients, it is PERFECT restoring the health of the frequently damaged adventurer. Since it takes several hours of slow simmering for that collagen to break down, it gives time for the rest of the party to scavenge for wild herbs, green onions, and mushrooms. It also lets any injured party members get some rest, repair gear, or craft arrows.
Best of all, items like lentils, pig knuckles (ham hocks), and the occasional rutabaga take very little inventory space for the easily encumbered. An adventuring party should not expend time and calories stalking game animals when they have a dungeon to raid. That’s why non-perishable items high in carbs and protein are essential on a long rest.
