Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop RPG-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Far too long ago, we made some pork red curry for the challenge word “Tiefling.” The next challenge word was “Adventurer’s Kit.”
This recipe blends two items from Pathfinder’s Ultimate Equipment sourcebook, Travel Cake Mix, and Halfling’s Rations. Travel cake mix is a “mixture of flour, powdered milk, natron, sugar, and salt lasts for months in a sealed container. When mixed with water (eggs are optional), it creates a batter you can use to make biscuits (or other quick-breads such as pancakes, waffles, scones, or muffins) or a cake.”
Basically? It’s the medieval-fantasy equivalent of Bisquick.
Halfling rations commonly include “sweetened dried fruit, aged sausage, hard sharp cheese, honey cakes, and a mixture of roasted grains, nuts, and molasses.” Since halflings usually need a wee bit more flavor than what a biscuit will provide, it stands to reason they would mix in some of these ingredients for variety. So that’s what I also did, adding raisins, roasted sunflower seeds, and fresh rosemary.
You’ll notice this recipe’s similarity to my Outlander themed “bannock-wiches” since that’s what I based it on. A bannock is a simple skillet bread, and it makes sense for an adventurer to make them. When you don’t have access to an oven, reach out for your frying pan! With pack-stable ingredients and quick cook-times, you can enjoy some fresh, flavorful bread any time you set down camp.
