Munchies & Minis | Myconid Cap w/Garlic Butter

Myconid Cap w/Garlic Butter inspired by Dungeon & Dragons' Descent into Avernus adventure module. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is my Dungeons & Dragons and tabletop RPG-inspired live cooking show. Once a week, I make a snack or meal to pair with a side of dice rolls. You can catch me on Twitch or Facebook Live (unless indicated otherwise on social media) Wednesday nights at 7 pm EST.

This past week I posted the video for a bison meatloaf with sweet corn recipe inspired by Dungeons & Dragons’ Dragon Magazine. This week’s video, we take a bite of the lower planes from Dungeons & Dragons Descent into Avernus module with some pan-fried mushroom fries that bite back.

A Taste of the Lower Planes

The Descent into Avernus campaign flings adventurers from the Faerunian city of Baldur’s Gate into the first layer of the Nine Hells. So when I saw Power Score’s Great List of Food & Drink reference the Pan-Fried Myconid Cap and Garlic Butter dish from this module, I realized this isn’t a simple Underdark recipe. This is a pub dish from hell.

Myconid refers to the giant mushroom people living in Faerun’s Underdark. While peaceful, they can certainly pack a poisonous punch. That said, I’m sure the denizens of the Lower Planes are immune to such effects. Since you are human and vulnerable, I made my myconid fries out of portobello mushroom caps.

I then infused some flavors of the Nine Hells into my dish by making up a beer and milk batter with some Korean chili paste. And by doing so, I combined boozy sloth with a seductive, lustful heat. Have you ever had gochujang paste? It’s hot as hell but so sweet and addictive that I practically bathe my bibimbop in it.

After rolling in some panko and frying in a miserly amount of oil, chomping into this fried myconid releases a prideful crunch that echoes to the heavens. And to complete the seven sins, I also whipped up a gluttonously creamy honey butter that stings with the wrathful snap of raw garlic.
