Munchies & Minis | Spicy Hippogriff Wings

Spicy Hippogriff Wings inspired by Tiny Taverns RPG by Gallant Knight Games. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is my tabletop RPG-inspired live cooking show. Once a week, I make a snack or meal to pair with a side of dice rolls. You can catch me on Twitch (unless indicated otherwise on social media) Wednesday nights at 7 pm EST.

Last time I posted the video for spiced blood orange and ginger marmalade inspired by Blue Rose RPG. In this week’s video, we make some spiced turkey wings inspired by Tiny Taverns RPG from Gallant Knight Games.

It all starts in a Tavern…

If you’ve played any high fantasy RPG, you know “you all meet in a tavern” as well as “once upon a time.” The thing about Tiny Taverns, though? Not only do you start in a tavern, but you also work there. Tiny Taverns is a slice-of-life roleplaying game “one of friendship, a group of former adventurers running a tavern together (…) in a fantasy world, replete with monsters, magic and cheerfully-crafted menus (and hijinks!)”

When I found Tiny Taverns’ Kickstarter in April, I knew I had to have it. You might remember a game where I played a Tavern keeper. I found not only did I love it, but I missed it. Sure, I love sword and sorcery combat, but the things that I genuinely desire from RPG are the character interactions and relationships. This game allows and encourages friendships and rivalries where the stakes are high, and the steaks are served medium.

While there are mechanics for cooking and menu creation in the gamebook, the appendices provide some sample dishes your tavern may cook for your customers. That’s where I found today’s recipe for Spicy Hippogriff Wings:

“Whole plucked hippogriff wings are marinated in buttermilk, tossed in seasonings, and then either roasted or fried until crispy. Then they are dunked in a rich, spicy combination of melted butter and aged pepper sauce. Commonly served with crème fraîche, celery ribs, and a dipping sauce mixture of dill, chives, and mascarpone cheese. One hippogriff wing typically serves two. Goes great with beer.” Tiny Taverns, p.219

So just that we’re clear, these are hippogriff wings, not chicken wings. The closest thing to a hippogriff in an American grocery store is a turkey. Have you met one in the wild? They’re terrifying! And while their wings won’t exactly feed two people, one section is enough to gnaw on as you enjoy a good farmhouse ale.

You’re not here to make any Buffalo-style Hippogriff Wings, though. You want those wings to taste like they come from a fantasy tavern. That’s why our wing sauce contains poudre forte, or “strong powder,” a medieval spice blend containing cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and black pepper

Finally, true to Tiny Taverns’ description, I even made a creamy dill and chive sauce to soothe your pepper-slathered tongue. You’re welcome.
