Munchies & Minis | Honeyflame Bread

Honeyflame Bread inspired D&D and Critical Role's Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. Recipe by the Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is my tabletop RPG-inspired live cooking show. Once a week, I make a snack or meal to pair with a side of dice rolls. You can catch me on Twitch (unless indicated otherwise on social media) Wednesday nights at 7 pm EST.

Last time I posted the video for a wine gelatin “Cave Slime Compote” inspired by Tiny Taverns RPG from Gallant Knight Games. In this week’s video, we hop into the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, Critical Role‘s D&D campaign setting for a sweet and spicy recipe for Honeyflame Bread.

Buns on Fire!

Today’s dish, Honeyflame Bread, comes from Wildemount’s Menagerie Coast. Described as “a fried dessert soaked in honey and coated in Marquesian spices,” it sounds a little like a sopaipilla from Central and South American cuisine.

Going further into the Menagerie Coast culinary table, I saw paella, plantain cups, gazpacho, and a drink that looks suspiciously like a tamarind agua fresca. I also found Clovis Concord’s Silvertooth — a spirit that seems remarkably similar to tepache. With this, I thought it a safe bet to make some RPG-inspired Mexican food.

If you’ve never had one before, a sopaipilla is a quickbread deep-fried after a short rise. Depending on the location, they could be made with a mix of wheat flour and masa harina, or ground pumpkin. The version we know and love, though, is the New Mexican and Tex-Mex puffy dessert smothered in powdered sugar and honey.

Sure, you could make some sopaipillas, drench them in honey and add the Marquisian spices of saffron and paprika. I wanted to go a step further, though. I learned while visiting Mexico that we Americans have a minimal view of its cuisine. Why not try something you’re less likely to find at your local margarita bar in the states? That’s why I made some salsa macha — a peanut and chili-based salsa from Veracruz– and mixed it with bee barf honey

The result is sweet, spicy, and tangy with lime zest. Got any leftover Honeyflame sauce? Make some fajitas! I just so happen to have a bonus recipe for some available to my Patreon and Ko-fi supporters.
