Munchies & Minis | Mushroom King Stir-Fry

Mushroom King Stir-Fry inspired by Antonio Demico's Dragon Stew 5e supplement. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is my tabletop RPG-inspired live cooking show. Once a week, I make a snack or meal to pair with a side of dice rolls. You can catch me on Twitch (unless indicated otherwise on social media) Wednesday nights at 7 pm EST.

In our last video, we made crispy-skinned chicken dumplings from D&D‘s travel guide, Volo’s Guide to the Sword Coast. This week, we explore the Dragon Stew campaign setting with a recipe for king oyster mushroom stir-fry!

Through the Fungal Wildwoods

For those who have not heard of Dragon Stew, it’s an independent D&D 5e supplement created by artist Antonio Demico. In it, you can enhance current classes with culinary-themed paths such as bakers with dessert-based familiars and seasoners with spice-enhanced weapons. You can also take a food type subclass such as the druid’s Circle of the Brew and the bard’s College of Hosting.

Dragon Stew is more than just flavor text, however. The supplement also provides a multi-module campaign that blends monster hunting, dungeon crawling, and competitive cooking. That’s right. Very much in the style of Battle Chef Brigade, the town of Talaba controls its monster infestation through Iron Chef battles!

Today’s recipe, Mushroom King Stir-Fry, is the second challenge in the Dragon Stew campaign. Your party, tasked by the Foresti family of Talaba, must venture into the Fungal Wildwoods through sporelings and fungus-possessed dead and take down its ‘shroomy monarch. This isn’t some cute death cap in a crown. This is a behemoth King Oyster Mushroom with deadly lair attacks!

Assuming you defeat him, you then face the next challenge — feeding the village with its umami corpse. The Cooking Trial part of the adventure does paraphrase a basic recipe. Though in this episode, I’ve adapted it to include exact measurements, rice, steamed soft-yolk eggs, king oyster mushrooms, and a spicy-sweet sauce using 5-spice powder and gochujang chili paste.
