Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!
Munchies & Minis is my tabletop RPG-inspired live cooking show for those just joining us. Once a week, I make a snack or meal to pair with a side of dice rolls. You can catch me on Twitch (unless indicated otherwise on social media) Wednesday nights at 7 pm EST.
In our last video, we made Hriiat’s almond-and-apple tarts from D&D‘s Waterdeep. This episode, we consult Dragon Magazine‘s “Inns in an Instant” meal tables again for some Honey-Braised Boar Ribs.
Inns in an Instant Pot
The source behind today’s recipe, Honey-Braised Boar Ribs, comes from the “Inns in an Instant” article from Dragon Magazine, issue 418, from December 2012. This article provides DMs with tables to create last-minute taverns and inns, from names and descriptions to innkeepers and menus within a few simple dice rolls. You can find the article on Scribd (free with a 30-day trial). I recommend downloading it, as it is an invaluable resource for a DM whose players are hungry for details. Today’s recipe for Honey-Braised Boar Ribs comes from the “Woodland” table.
So what I pictured was some woodsmoke-scented barbecue ribs imbued with forest flavors like mustard, garlic, sage, apple, and honey. DMing while watching a grill or smoker is inadvisable, though. Braising in the oven also takes longer than my stream’s time slot. That’s why this dish is a “set-and-forget-until-serving” recipe using a pressure cooker.
Now before you worry about burning through your game night budget, I used pork baby back ribs instead of wild boar. If you want authenticity, I won’t stop you, but you can also add a touch of beef stock concentrate to the pot without dropping 60 bucks on shipping. Otherwise, behold, as this modern invention tenderizes and infuses this primal treat with smokey lapsang tea and sweet apple cider!
