Munchies & Minis | S1E5: Orc Horde Cherry Charred Pork

Orc Horde Cherry Charred Pork Skewers inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Last week we made some Cheet-Orbs & Dew-BQ Sauce for the challenge word “Party.” This week’s challenge word is “Orc.”

So for this episode, I had to think of feeding the hard-working orc invader on the go. Orcs rarely farm, hence the need for raiding parties. They might keep pigs because they breed quickly and you can feed them anything. Otherwise, they’re probably just going to cook up whatever they happen to raid over a warm, crackling fire.

Why not just go with that instinct then? That’s why I decided to make some grilled bacon-wrapped pork skewers with cherries and red onion. The bacon keeps the lean pork moist while grilling. Cherries would be some perfect low hanging fruit for a sweet note. And red onions keep well while traveling, adding a spicy bite that’s delicious whether cooked or eaten raw.

Horde Cherry Charred Pork

Makes 6-8 skewers.

Equipment: Mixing bowl or gallon-sized ziplock bag, six metal skewers with loops, grill or grill pan and stovetop, cooking spray, aluminum foil, tongs.

  • 3 Tb honey mustard
  • dressing
  • 1/2 Tb kosher salt
  • 3 tsp smoked paprika
  • 3 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground clove
  • 1 lb smoked bacon, each strip cut into three pieces
  • 14.5 oz. can of pitted cherries, drained
  • red onion, cut into 1.5-inch slices
  • handful of fresh mint leaves

Instructions:

Season the meat:
  1. Mix the salt, paprika, garlic powder, clove, and cinnamon together in a small dish, then set aside.
  2. In the mixing bowl or ziplock bag, coat the meat with honey mustard dressing.
  3. Add the spice blend, one tablespoon at a time, and massage into the pork cubes.
Assemble the skewers:
  1. Wrap each piece of pork with a slice of bacon and thread onto a skewer, alternating sections with hunks of onion and two cherries. Leave an inch of space at the end of the skewer.

Grill and serve:

  1. Spray the clean grill grate or pan with cooking spray and preheat on medium heat for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Grill the skewers on medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side.
  3. Remove from the grill, cover with foil, then let rest 2-3 minutes. Garnish with shredded mint leaves before serving.

I hope that this episode inspired you to start a culinary campaign of your own. Next week I’ll be tackling the #52WeeksOfDnD challenge word “Quest” with a recipe I’d like to call “Treasure Chest McGuffin Muffins .”

Stay tuned for the next episode! Archived episodes are on YouTube.
