Munchies & Minis | Chromatic Dragon Eggs

Chromatic Dragon Egg Cheese Balls inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Two weeks ago we made some Rat King Cheesy Pasta Fritters for the challenge word “Ratfolk.” ”This last week’s challenge word was “Dragon.”

You’d think a word rife with creative possibilities would be easy to figure out. You’d think that. That was the precise reason why it most certainly was not. I know one thing, though, I wanted to base my recipe on the Chromatic Dragons. For those unfamiliar with the term, a Chromatic Dragon in D&D is one of the evil, non-metallic colored dragons with the breath of fire, poison, electricity, ice, or acid depending on its variety.

I vacillated between chromatic rock candy (which would’ve taken too long to do) and chromatic dragon cake pops (which would also take too long to do.) It was when I realized that the Game of Thrones show finale is fast approaching. Why not have a recipe versatile to both franchises, I thought? That’s why I decided to make cheese balls that not only resemble dragon eggs but also feature flavors associated with their chromatic dragon counterpart.

Black dragons disintegrate their enemies with acid, so a lemon-garlic egg coated in poppy and sesame seeds seemed fitting. The classic red dragon is a fire-breather, so it makes sense its egg would also burn your tastebuds with gochujang and smoked paprika. Finally, the green dragon’s poisonous nature is bittersweet with matcha and honey, and intoxicatingly delicious with almonds and nutmeg.

Chromatic Dragon Egg Cheese Balls inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Chromatic Dragon Eggs

Makes three cheese balls.

Equipment: Two mixing bowls, two spatulas, plastic wrap, refrigerator, and food processor.

Ingredients:

Cheese Ball Mix:
  • 12 oz. shredded white cheddar cheese
  • 12 oz. cream cheese, softened
Red Dragon Egg:
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 Tb gochujang sauce
  • 1/2 cup peanuts
  • pinch of kosher salt
Black Dragon Egg:
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 Tb poppy seeds
  • 1/4 cup black sesame seeds
Green Dragon Egg
  • 2 Tb honey
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 Tb matcha powder
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract

Instructions:

  1. Pour the shredded cheese into the bowl of your food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Empty the contents into a large mixing bowl
  2. Scrape the cream cheese into the same bowl and use two spatulas to blend the cheeses to a uniform consistency. Flatten the cheese in the bowl with a spatula and divide into thirds.
Make the green dragon egg:
  1. Scoop a third into the empty mixing bowl, then fold in the nutmeg, almond extract, and matcha powder until it is a uniform green. Wrap the ball with plastic wrap and mold it into an egg shape. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes.
  2. Remove the ball from the plastic wrap and arrange the almonds on the outer surface of the egg, starting at the top and then overlapping them. Refrigerate again until serving.
Make the red dragon egg:
  1. Scoop a third into the empty mixing bowl, then fold in the gochujang sauce until fully blended. Wrap the ball with plastic wrap and mold it into an egg shape. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes.
  2. Toss the peanuts in a small dish with the paprika and kosher salt. Remove the ball from the plastic wrap and arrange the peanuts like scales until it covers the ball. Refrigerate again until serving.
Make the black dragon egg:
  1. Scoop a third into the empty mixing bowl, then fold in the garlic and lemon zest until fully blended. Wrap the ball with plastic wrap and mold it into an egg shape. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes.
  2. Toss the sesame and poppy seeds together in a small dish. Remove the ball from the plastic wrap and coat it in the seed mix, slightly pressing them into the surface. Refrigerate again until serving.

I hope that this episode inspired you to start a culinary campaign of your own. Next week I’ll be tackling the #52WeeksOfDnD challenge word “Profession” with a Smithy’s Sausage Platter.

Make sure to join me live this Friday (apologies for this week’s delay!) or every Wednesday on Twitch from 7 pm – 9 pm EST. OR you can catch the archived episode on YouTube.
