Munchies & Minis | Chauntea ‘s Holy Crumble

Chauntea 's Holy Crumble inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is a live Twitch cooking show where I make a tabletop or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired snack and then paint a miniature. To kick the first season off, I decided to start @RaineRysa‘s #52WeeksofDnD fanart challenge. Far too long ago, we made some Menzoberranzan-style chocolate cupcakes for the challenge word “Difficult Terrain.” The next challenge word was “Religion.”

I know that’s not entirely accurate. I had to switch challenge words those weeks because I promised my VERY FIRST GUEST EVER that we would make this dish. Friends, meet Katie Downey, aka Goblin Katie! Katie is an Atlanta-local creative. She is a cast member on the sci-fi/fantasy D&D podcast Stellar Arcanum (Zale) and the D4 D&D stream (Saesha). She is also a fantastic person, all-around.

So onto today’s recipe. The subject of religion tends to bring up the image of the celestials I feature in my recipe for Upper Planes Trifle. That’s why I chose to instead feature another diety in this subject, Chauntea, the agriculture goddess from the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Followers of Chauntea hold abundance and fertility in high regard. They eschew waste and destruction and practice ethical agriculture to ensure the soil’s bounty. Chauntea provides life. And in return, her followers take care of her. It is a relationship borne from mutual care and love.

I feel that a crumble recipe epitomizes this careful lack of waste. Fruit does not have to be perfect to go into a crumble. It’s the leftovers of the harvest baked under a scavenger’s crust. A crumble encompassing Chauntea ‘s holiness would embrace last season’s bounty while welcoming the new fruits of the earth. It would also revel in symbols of fertility. That’s why I chose apples since Chauntea ‘s fanart depictions show her with them, and peaches because most world cultures believe them to be an aphrodisiac.

Since Chauntea ‘s holy symbol is a sheaf of grain adorned with a blooming rose, I mixed in some rosewater and rose extract, then covered the flour, oat, and hazelnut crust with candied rose petals. Fun fact: before the vanilla became popular, rosewater was the baking flavor of choice.
