Munchies & Minis | Kryn Dynasty Yuyandl

Kryn Dynasty Yuyandl inspired by Critical Role. Recipe by The Gluttonous Geek.

Welcome back, Geeky Gluttons, to another episode of Munchies & Minis!

For those just joining us, Munchies & Minis is my tabletop RPG-inspired live cooking show. Once a week, I make a snack or meal to pair with a side of dice rolls. You can catch me on Twitch (unless indicated otherwise on social media) Wednesday nights at 7 pm EST.

Last time I posted the video for sweet and spicy sopaipillas from the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, Critical Role‘s D&D campaign setting. In this week’s video, we return to the same sourcebook for Kryn Empire Yuyandl.

From Sunless Gardens to Plate…

The Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount describes Yuyandl as “grilled yuyo (a zucchini-like vegetable that grows in Rosohna’s sunless gardens) spiced and served with rice.” The city of Rosohna serves as the capital to the Kryn dynasty under magically cloud-covered skies. Crops such as yuyo, mushrooms, kor’run, and rice grow on both surface and subterranean farmland.

From what I’ve seen on the Kryn aesthetics, culture, and cuisine, the empire seems very similar to a mishmash of East Asian dynastic periods. With that, I decided to splice three recipes together — Japanese hibachi grilled zucchini and steamed short-grain rice, and Korean soy eggs. Of course, I also threw my own additions to make this dish specifically appropriate to the Kryn Dynasty.

First I used mushroom-based soy sauce for my soaking liquid and glaze. Mushrooms act as a prime ingredient in most Kryn cuisine. Given Eastern Wynandir’s climate is better suited for root vegetables and grasses, I flavored the sauce with garlic, horseradish, and ginger. Though sake exists in the form of Erzfaalyu in Wildemount, I also used Korean plum wine to imitate Yunfaalyu.

I then steamed the eggs to soft-boiled consistency. Steaming is not only easier to do than boiling, but it’s also common to East Asian cuisine. Then after soaking the peeled eggs in the sauce for at least 24 hours, I reduced it to a thick, sweet glaze. Combined with some freshly cooked-the-right-way short-grain rice, you can dine like the guest of a Kryn noble without breaking the bank.
